The biomass package adopted by the German government at the end of January 2025 has set a decisive course for biogas as part of the energy transition. The path for biogas plant operators after the first remuneration period of the EEG is clearly set out. Anyone wishing to continue operating their plant after 20 years must align their plant with the following three criteria, among others:

A highly flexible, market-orientated driving style
during the dark doldrums, which produce and feed in electricity when the sun and wind provide little or no energy: in the morning, in the evening and in winter.

Compliance with the maize cap
of 30 % in 2025 and 25 % from 2026

Greater utilisation of residual materials
such as manure, straw and feed residues as well as slurry and waste materials.
